A walk in the desert

I went on a 20-mile hike with our scouts this past Saturday. We hiked in the desert just west of Salt Lake. Most of the hike was along the historic Pony Express Trail.

Even after multiple times of pleading with these scouts to come prepared, especially with good hiking shoes, many of them showed up wearing those floppy, big, loose-laced skateboard shoes. The boys with good hiking shoes were the first to finish. One of the other leaders said, “Now we know how the prophets feel. Always having to beg and plead for us to be obedient, get your food storage, get out of debt, etc.”

  1. That looks like something Seth would really enjoy. How long did it take from start to finish?

  2. Hey, that does look like fun. I’d do it in flip-flops.

I’ll show Aubrey the detailed report of your hike when I get home. Did you start running at mile 13? No, wait. That means you took a long break. Since time elapsed but no distance gained.

I did notice that you hit 6.0 mph at one point. Good job, Jason.

    Very cool stats.

  3. Sounds like a fun hike; Tara and I were having fun with the map/GPS data you collected. Which GPS unit to you use? Any features you wish you had?

My friend runs with one that has a virtual partner and self racing features.

  4. I have a garmin forerunner 301. It’s primarily for training, it has the virtual partner that you can pace against. Lots of other features. The thing it doesn’t do is regular kind of GPS tracking, mapping, etc. It has a rudimentary map feature that would help you get back to where you started if you got lost on a hike, but doesn’t display maps (like google maps or topographic maps). It’s fun to use and fun to track your workouts, etc.
